About The Choctaw Sun and Staff

The Sun brings a NEWsday to the people of Choctaw County. The Choctaw Sun published its first issue on November 13, 2003 in Gilbertown, Alabama.

When we asked you what you wanted in a paper - to a person - you said fairness, honesty, and accuracy.

You said you want photos and in depth news stories about the people you know and the events that affect your life, and you want this information in a timely manner. We hope to give you that and much more in the Choctaw Sun.

Since starting the Choctaw Sun has won eleven awards from the Alabama Press Association "Better Newspaper Contest" including 3rd place in General Excellence.

Publishing a newspaper is a unique enterprise. There are few other businesses where the company's goal is to bind a community together. But that's exactly what we intend to do.

The Sun will be a mirror of the community it serves, and we will be involved. Our staff lives here... we work here, we shop here, our kids go to school here, and we worship here. The one thing you can count on, we will never, ever deliberately slant, censor, or "can" a legitimate news story that affects this community just because it may directly or indirectly involve one of the owners or staff of The Choctaw Sun or involve an issue that we may or may not agree with.

We have told you that this paper is a paper for ALL the people of Choctaw County and surrounding areas, and we intend to prove to you that we take our journalistic responsibilities very seriously. We will cover the good news and the bad. We will be there in times of tragedy and the times of celebration, and you can look to the Sun for the unbiased information that allows the entire community to share in and try to understand those experiences.

It is our role not to "make" the news but to report it .... fairly and factually ... to provide you with the information you need to make informed judgments about complex issues.

It matters not to the SUN whether you are young or old, man or woman, white or black, where your children attend school, what church you attend, or what your political preferences may be ... you are our friends. Your are our neighbors. You are our readers. And you are reason #1 why we are doing this. UPDATE: As of May 25, 2007, The Choctaw Sun purchased The Choctaw Advocate.

Current we have merged the two paper into one paper The Choctawn Sun/Advocate. We now have a circulation of over 5100. Tell your friends and family about us, and ask merchants where you shop to advertise with us. We thank you and we appreciate you, and we'll be looking forward to hearing from you soon.
